D. The MIICE outcomes related to the management of learning
8. Enhancing learning outcomes
This relates to schools', teachers' and school managers' focus on setting expectations for continuing but realistic progress in the uses of ICT and on putting it into a wider context
Here is a number of illustrations from a spread of Scottish schools and education authorities of 3 of the 4 components. In each case there is one or more related capacities associated with A Curriculum for Excellence
8. Enhancing learning outcomes: progression in learning
Jane MacAulay teaches a P3 class at Kirkhill Primary School in Newton Mearns in the southern suburbs of Glasgow. In this lesson, she is using AppleWorks drawing software and the interactive whiteboard and pen to teach her pupils about the Viking gods. Ms MacAulay uses an ACTIVstudio package with the whiteboard to make up a series of electronic flipcharts with interactive exercises for the children to do. Jane's main aim is to teach her pupils about the Viking gods. She plans to use a drawing package to design pictures of the gods, and the interactive whiteboard and pen to drag words into a passage about the Vikings
"the pupils were perhaps not challenged enough and that next time she teaches a similar lesson she will include new tools to stretch their abilities further" (Jane MacAulay of Kirkhill Primary)

- Successful learners: use technology for learning
8. Enhancing learning outcomes: development of new teaching styles
Lisa Hanna teaches modern languages at Gourock High School. She uses Quia Web (www.quia.com) to create games and activities for her pupils. In this S2 French class, pupils revise vocabulary for parts of the body using games like Hangman and Battleships
Interactive games and act ivies for French using the www.quia.com website
"the pupils enjoyed it and she had a chance to go round making sure everyone understood" (Lisa Hanna of Gourock High School)

- Successful learners: use technology for learning
8. Enhancing learning outcomes: enable learners to modify information in a variety of forms, including text, graphical objects, moving images, sounds and web pages
The nursery pupils at Wormit Primary School in Fife are to find out about the non-teaching staff at their school as part of a project. A series of interviews are arranged and one is to be with the head teacher. The class teacher, Silke Morris, transcribes the interviews into a Clicker 4 template, adds photographs that the pupils have taken, and then the whole presentation is watched on the new interactive whiteboard
Interviewing techniques using Clicker
"The pupils have gained a lot of confidence in using the equipment and in talking to adults. Every child has had a chance to take part in the activity whether it be working the tape recorder, taking a photograph or asking a question" (Silke Morris, nursery teacher at Wormit Primary)

- Effective contributors: communicate in different ways and in different settings
Sean Hart teaches music to S4/S5 pupils at Douglas Ewart High School in Newton Stewart. His pupils use music sequencing software called Evolution Audio. The technology allows them to record their music performance into the computer using Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) language. The pupils can then play back their composition from the computer, thus recreating the original performance
Music sequencing software to recreate musical performances
"creating a piece of music can be a lengthy process, requiring commitment and hard work. ... with this software he has learned more about harmonies, about 'thirds' and 'sixths' and how to use them together to produce a good sound" (Neil, student at Douglas Ewart High)

8. Enhancing learning outcomes: encourage development of informed attitudes in relation to ICT in society
